Frequently asked questions
How strong are they?
Pandanus is tough and hard-wearing. A floor mat stands up to daily use well; for very heavy traffic a little care in placement and cleaning keeps it looking good.
How do I care for them?
Brush or vacuum away dust, and wipe with a slightly damp cloth when needed. Keep them out of prolonged, heavy rain and direct sun to preserve the colour.
What sizes are available?
Small, medium and large. A medium mat suits a picnic or a doorway, a large or extra-large one works as a room floor mat.
Are they soft underfoot?
Yes. The woven pandanus gives a soft, slightly springy feel — comfortable to lie or sit on, and pleasant to walk on with bare feet.
Who weaves them?
Fijian craftswomen, working by hand in the traditional way. Each mat is finished by the woman who wove it, so no two are exactly alike.
What are pandanus mats?
They are floor and picnic mats woven from the long leaves of the pandanus plant. The leaves are dried, split and sometimes dyed by hand before being woven, a craft practised across the Pacific including Fiji.
